How long does it take to get my text back?
This depends on the length of your document, the service you choose, and our current work load. You can view current turnaround times on the turnaround page (the times may be shorter than indicated). We do not offer a priority service for fast turnarounds.

If you are using the Mac Pages App click the View button on the toolbar and select Show Character Count. You can also paste your text into the window on the word count page.

Will my document be edited by a native English speaker?
Yes. Not only that, but editors must have editing and/or English language qualifications and experience.

Can I write my document in English and have it translated by Writing Support?
No. This is an editing service, not a translation service.

Can I use an AI translation service (such as Google translate) and then send it to you for checking.
We do not recommend this. Editing a translation is sometimes more difficult than translating itself. And if you are using this service in order to improve you English writing skills, you won't learn much by using this strategy.

Can you apply a style guide to my text?
Yes. We can apply style guides such as APA, MLA, etc. You can also supply a particular style guide if you particular styling needs. Please make a note of that with your order, and upload a particular style guide if you have one.

Do you use AI in the editing process?
No. There are various reasons that AI is not used:
  • Confidentiality: Many AI tools, especially free ones use uploaded texts for training purposes. This means that your text, or parts of your text, may appear later in other generated texts. It's unlikely that anything uploaded to a generative AI tool will remain fully confidential. You should be aware or this if you use these tools to help with your own writing.
  • Transparency: It is important to be honest, open and clear about your sources. It's difficult to do this if the results given by generative AI don't provide accurate and reliable sources, and often they don't. Also, generative AI providers themselves are not particularly transparent about their sources. If you choose to use AI to help with the generation of texts then you should be clear about that and acknowledge it as you would any other source. For our part, we believe that that human editing its the best way forward and we don't use AI.
  • Copyright: You are legally and ethically responsible for the texts you produce. If you rely on generative AI you cannot be sure that you have not infringed someone's copyright.
  • Ownership: Can you honestly consider yourself the creator and owner of a text which is only partly generated by you? A text should contain your ideas written in your words for your audience. If you use AI you can easily fall into the trap of using words or phrases which you do not fully understand, perhaps distorting what you originally intended to say. You are also in danger of plagiarising is you use long phrases on sentences attributable to someone else without acknowledgement. You must also consider the type of language you use, starting with your audience and your purpose. You need to consider nuance and context; the same thing may be said in many different ways but they will all have subtly different effects on the reader. AI may not be able to make the correct choices in this regard. Only you can do that.
  • Learning to Write: Learning to write well is not easy. It takes time, effort, practice. Only you can do this. If you hand over responsibility for writing a text you are missing the opportunity to learn how to write well. The struggle to write well not only helps you to write better, it also helps you to think better. This struggle helps you to clarify your ideas. It's well worth the effort.
